Benefits of Physical Therapy
Usually thought of for post injury rehabilitation, physical therapy can be helpful in improving mobility and optimizing functional health. Most injuries and pain occur as a result of a muscle weakness or imbalance, poor body mechanics or joint dysfunction. By identifying these underlying issues, one is able to relieve symptoms, prevent further injury, and improve performance.

Through manual techniques such as deep tissue work and joint mobilizations combined with exercise and self-management instruction, physical therapy can help alleviate most musculoskeletal problems. Even if there is no pain involved, physical therapy can be beneficial in increasing articulation of the spine, joint range of motion and balancing muscle strength.

Pilates and Physical Therapy
Once a dysfunction or weakness is identified, Pilates exercises can be modified to target problems areas. For example a person with back problems can still work their abdominals without doing a crunch, curl-up or traditional Pilates exercises. The reverse is also true; if there are exercises that are difficult to perform due to a lack of mobility manual techniques may prove beneficial.
